August 1st, 1987 - Austin Guitar School opened its doors thanks to the owner, Ted Hall. Now, 21 years later AGS is still Austin's #1 pick for aspiring guitarists. In fact, our guitar school was so successful that we became more versatile by adding Electric Bass, Drum, and Piano programs. Over the years, we have accumulated such a diverse staff, great musicians who have a passion for what they do, so much so that they want to share it with others.
The school specializes in private instruction for all styles of guitar - Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Dobro, Classical Guitar, Electric Bass, Mandolin, Lap Steel, Banjo, Drums, and Piano. Group instruction is offered for Beginning Blues Guitar and Beginning Electric Bass thru the University of Texas. We have also just begun implementing a ‘Kids Guitar Class’ for kids ranging in age from 5 -9.
All our students have the opportunity to perform with a band, in front of a crowd every three months in what we call our ‘Student Showcases’. The Showcases are generally held on Sunday afternoons and are an all day event. They are completely free!
Also available to our students is our music library and movie theatre. We have hundreds of instructional videos, magazines, and tab books that our students are welcome to use here at the school.

Bruce Lawrence, Tony Redman and Kris Brown are three of the best guitar players I personally know, and living in Austin, I know a lot of guitar players. All three of them teach at Austin Guitar School.
Not everybody is serious about learning guitar. Some people think it's a shortcut to being on the cover of People Weekly. If you're like John Lee Hooker, though, and guitar is one of those things you got in ya and it's gots to come out, taking lessons is an important step to learning how to express yourself on the instrument.
Learning an instrument is difficult, and getting some sort of guidance is invaluable. All you might have read about Hendrix or Van Halen not ever having a guitar lesson is a bunch of hooey. Bobby Womack would sit down with Hendrix and show him stuff all the time. Players learn from other players. There are some great players to learn from at Austin Guitar School.
