Jazz II V I Licks
by Mark Bish
copyright 1998
The II V I chord
change is the most important one used in jazz. It is found in many old standards as well
as BeBop. Memorizing melodic lines that work over the changes is a must for anyone who
wants to play jazz.
The 1st example
is a Charlie Parker lick, while the 2nd example is one of my own. Often the scale sources
for II V I licks are as follows:
On the II min7
chord, play a Dorian idea. On the V Dom7 or V Dom7 Alt., play melodic minor up a 1/2 step
from the root.
Learn these with
several fingerings and in all the keys!!
