Bruce Lawrence
Bruce has been playing guitar since the 70’s. His early influences included the
rock, country, and pop music that was played on F.M. radio at the time. These
influences developed into a cohesive style by the early-mid 1980's earning Bruce
gigs with many local bands.
After graduating from high school in Houston, Texas Bruce moved to California to
study guitar at the Guitar Institute of Technology. In Hollywood Bruce had
exposure to a whole world of musical talent and experience. Bruce graduated from
G.I.T. in 1988 with a degree in Musical Performance and moved to the live music
capitol of the world, Austin, Texas.
Flush with new experiences from the Hollywood music scene and a new perspective
on guitar Bruce returned to Texas with a down-to-earth functional view of music
theory and a deep knowledge of classic rock history. He quickly found work as a
studio musician and as a live performer in the Austin music scene.
In 1990 Bruce started teaching at Austin Guitar School and has made the study of
guitar a fun experience for hundreds of students ranging from beginners to
professionals. Bruce teaches at all levels for rock and alternative students as
well as improvisational theory. Many of his students are beginners or
intermediary players who enjoy Bruce's style of teaching:
"Too many schools of music treat learning guitar
like learning advanced math. Learning guitar can take some work but it doesn't
have to be boring or dry. It should be fun every step of the way so a student
should always be able to enjoy themselves. For me being a guitar player has been
the most enjoyable part of my life. Anyone who wants to be a part of it can have
the experience. It's not rocket science, it's music!"
In addition to a degree in Musical Performance from the Musician's Institute Bruce
holds a degree in Accounting from Austin Community College and a degree in
Economics from the University of Texas at Austin. He performs locally on
occasion and teaches exclusively at Austin Guitar School.
